Maximizing Team Success: The Power of the 6 Types of Working Genius

March 9, 2021

Patrick Lencioni, founder of The Table Group, has defined six gifts, or skills, that are of high importance in a group. He calls these the “Six Genius’s”. The six types of Genius include Wonder, Invention, Discernment, Galvanizing, Enablement, and Tenacity.

Out of these six, two should come naturally and give you joy and energy, (“Working Genius”). Two are not natural to you and are frustrating, (“Working Frustration”). And two are fall in between – they may or may not come naturally to you, but they do not provide you joy or energy, (“Working Competency”). Within a team, having at least one person with one of each Working Genius’, allows for the most success.

The Genius of Wonder: the natural gift of pondering the possibility of greater potential and opportunity in a given situation.

The Genius of Invention: the natural gift of creating original and novel ideas and solutions.

The Genius of Discernment: the natural gift of intuitively and instinctively evaluating ideas and situations.

The Genius of Galvanizing: the natural gift of rallying, inspiring and organizing others to take action.

The Genius of Enablement: the natural gift of providing encouragement and assistance for an idea or project.

The Genius of Tenacity: the natural gift of pushing projects or tasks to completion to achieve results.

The Table Group offers an assessment to determine which of these are your Working Genius, Frustrations, or Competencies. After taking the test, you receive a report, which includes a dialed in description of each Genius, how individuals with or without the Genius react to it, and its importance to a team.

Taking the assessment as a team allows the group to identify areas of weakness and strength. It can even provide insight on possible tension or misunderstanding. In the same way, this can also be beneficial for families. Or on an individual level -allowing you to see truth in your actions and know why you respond to others in certain ways.
